San Jose Mercury News is selling its 'outdated' building ...

San Jose Mercury News is putting its headquarters on the block.

?Our current campus, built in 1965 and consisting of a 312,000 square foot main building and a 12,000 square foot garage on 35.68 acres, exceeds our current needs and the site, of course, has considerable value in the commercial real estate market,? says publisher Mac Tully?s memo to employees.

The memo and Employee Q&A:

April 15, 2013

Dear colleague,

Today we are announcing the next step in the San Jose Mercury News? future.
merc
We are selling the San Jose facility and will be relocating our content, advertising and business operations to a new location and moving printing and production of the Mercury News to the Concord and Hayward plants operated by BANG East Bay.

Our current campus, built in 1965 and consisting of a 312,000 square foot main building and a 12,000 square foot garage on 35.68 acres, exceeds our current needs and the site, of course, has considerable value in the commercial real estate market. Our goal is to find new office space that is both accessible for our employees and for our customers ? both our audience and advertisers./CONTINUES

Bay Area Newspaper Group will continue to publish all current newspaper titles and after the production work is moved, the ten daily newspapers now printed in San Jose will have increased page count capability and even improved color capacity. Some of the publications will also enjoy later deadlines which will allow for more late sports results.

These changes will result in a workforce expansion in the Hayward and Concord plants and a reduction in San Jose of production-related staff. Those employees will be receiving a separate communication regarding this process.

Based on our experience with the Walnut Creek facility, the sale and relocation will likely occur in phases and may take several months to complete. We will immediately begin the search for new offices for our San Jose-based content, advertising and business teams.

I know that you will have questions as we move forward in the process so I have included a brief Q&A document along with this notice. Also, we will be hosting employee meetings at 2:30 and 4:15 in assembly room. As always, you can reach out to your immediate supervisor with additional questions and feel free to contact me directly.

I am confident this is the right direction for the San Jose Mercury News.

Again, if you have any questions during this process, please don?t hesitate to ask.

Mac Tully

San Jose Mercury News
Employee Q&A
April 15, 2013

Is the San Jose Mercury News closing?

No, the Mercury News will be relocating our newsgathering, advertising and business operations. The production and printing will also be relocated.

Why are we moving?

Our current campus is simply too large and too expensive to operate for our current business operation. There is an opportunity for us to reduce infrastructure costs and to find a modern office location that will support the current and future needs of our company.

Does this put my job at risk?

There will be a workforce reduction in production-related jobs at the San Jose operation and there will be a workforce increase at the East Bay production facility.

Where are we moving?

We are searching for office space that is both accessible for our employees and for our customers ? both our audience and advertisers.

When are we moving?

The first phase of our move involves our production operation, and will begin within the next few months. We do not have a definite timeline for the remainder of the moves as we are just beginning the search for new office space. Employees will be kept informed through regular email communication and regularly scheduled staff meetings.
