Kobo finally makes its e-readers available through its own site

Strange, but until now, if you were aching for a Kobo reader, the company's site would redirect you to a third-party like Best Buy or select independent booksellers. The tablet / e-reader maker has finally opened up direct sales of devices like the Kobo Glo, Mini and Arc directly through its site to interested parties in Canada and the US. Of course, if you're so inclined, you can still buy those products and a number of accessories through the aforementioned partner sites. There's a press release after the break to help you decide.

Islamists accuse U.S. of interference in Egyptian affairs

CAIRO (Reuters) - President Mohamed Mursi's Islamist allies accused the United States on Tuesday of blatant interference in Egypt's affairs after Washington said Cairo was muzzling freedom of speech.

On Monday, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland criticized the questioning of the most popular Egyptian television satirist over allegations that he insulted Mursi and Islam.

Bassem Youssef, who rose to fame with a satirical online show after the uprising that swept Hosni Mubarak from power in 2011, turned himself in on Sunday after the prosecutor general issued an arrest warrant for the comedian.

The Justice and Freedom Party, political wing of the Muslim Brotherhood, condemned the comments from Nuland and said the government was committed to freedom of expression. "Nuland's statements are ... blatantly interfering in Egypt's internal affairs," a party statement said.

In Washington, Nuland said her remarks on Monday represented the views of the U.S. government and "we stand by those views as articulated here yesterday."

"Our point here yesterday was to say that rule of law needs to be applied appropriately in all circumstances," she told reporters at her daily news briefing.

"So no, we reject the notion that we were interfering."

Youssef, whose program is now on television and has been compared to U.S. satirist Jon Stewart's "The Daily Show", is accused of insulting Islam and undermining Mursi's standing.

The prosecutor general issued the warrant after at least four legal complaints filed by supporters of Mursi, an Islamist who was freely elected in June.

In what seemed a gesture of defiance, Youssef arrived at the prosecutor general's office wearing an oversized graduation hat modeled on one donned by Mursi when he was awarded an honorary degree in Pakistan in March. He was later released on bail of 15,000 Egyptian pounds ($2,200).

Nuland said on Monday Egyptian authorities seemed to be selectively prosecuting those accused of insulting the government while ignoring or playing down attacks on anti-government protesters and cases of "extreme police brutality".

The U.S. view is important in part because Washington provides $1.3 billion per year in military aid to Cairo.

Egypt has been in a state of political turmoil since the ouster of Mubarak, a long-time U.S. ally. Political uncertainty and growing street crime have deterred tourism, long an important driver of the Egyptian economy.

5 Tips to Getting Facebook to Work For You | GIFTE

Facebook has become a staple of most of our lives. With more than 1 billion (with a B!) users worldwide, it?s become a go-to source for connection and information for a huge number of people. Did you know the average person checks their Facebook news feed
about 7 times per day? With all of this happening, it?s become pretty much imperative
for your business to have a presence on Facebook somehow.

Like most travel professionals, I spent quite a bit of time confused and frustrated by Facebook and was starting to wonder if it was even worth the effort. Every email I sent to clients said ?like us on Facebook? at the bottom and I spent all this time posting to my agency page but not only were the number of likes not growing, but the people who had liked the page weren?t interacting with it at all. Sound familiar?

When I made a commitment to seriously growing my business, I decided that Facebook was one of the vehicles I would use to make that happen so I devoted myself to finding a way to make it work for me. It was very clearly working for many other brands, so why couldn?t I do the same? Fast forward 24 months and Facebook is a major source of business for Magical Memories Travel. On an average week we typically book between 3 and 7 vacations for people who say they found us through Facebook.

Here are a few tips to help you establish your business presence on Facebook:

1. Stop using your personal Facebook profile to market your business.
This is probably one of the most common questions I hear from travel professionals looking to use Facebook for marketing. Should I be using my personal profile or my business page? The answer is always a business page. In fact, Facebook terms of use prohibit you from doing business on your personal profile. Here?s the thing, just because your personal friends ?like? things you post about your business doesn?t mean they are going to do business with you. They are your friends and family ? they love you but most of us learned very early in this business that friends and family are typically our worst clients, right? Stop kidding yourself that the likes and comments on your personal page are going to generate real, significant revenue and bring everything over to a business page where Facebook will give you the tools to measure how effective your marketing efforts really are.

2. Social media is all about connection. Stop selling and start connecting!
Even with using a business page, it?s still about connection with the people you?ve attracted to your page. Remember people do business with those they know, like and trust. Let them get to know you! Share some of your life with them. Post information relevant to them other than your services. Post travel info without saying ?contact me for a free quote? on every post. You are building a connection with them and still reminding them that you are the ?go-to girl? when it comes to your travel niche. Social media is never the place for a hard sell.

3. Show your face!!!
People connect with people, not with logos. Unless your agency?s Facebook page is well established as the brand already, you will want to use your photo as your profile image. Seeing your face associated with your posts helps to build that know, like and trust connection. Posts made with a profile photo that is a headshot image where your face is clearly visible typically generate more engagement than those with a logo. In fact, you may want to consider having your business name display as either your name or your name and your business name. Many of your clients probably know you by name more readily than they do by your agency name. Remember, the name of the game is connection and people are on social media to connect with PEOPLE, not businesses.

4. Be consistent
This applies both to your message and ?voice? and to your posting schedule/routine. You want to make sure that you are putting forth the same image everywhere your clients can find you. On your web site, your blog, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, LinkedIn, Google Plus and in face to face meetings. If you have mixed messages, people will sense that you are not being genuine and authentic and nothing destroys trust faster than that! You also want to be consistent in your posting. Showing up regularly in front of your ?fans? increases that connection and will encourage them to interact with your page.

5. Don?t forget to be SOCIAL!
Post often and be sure to come back and interact with your fans when they comment. Don?t just like their comments and move on, speak to them! Ask a follow up question, thank them for commenting, respond to something they?ve said. Be friendly. Use their first name when you reply to them. A big mistake a lot of travel professionals make is to schedule all of their posts in advance and never go back to read what their fans are saying in reply. The more you interact, the stronger the connection!

Facebook can be a great tool for building your business, but just like everything else you work at it! If you?ve been struggling to make Facebook work for your business, make sure to join us on the tomorrow?s GIFTE ?Proof Facebook Works? webinar. I?ll be sharing lots of tips from my experience using Facebook to generate new leads and travel bookings in my business.

PFT: Pats 'don't need Ed Reed' with Wilson

dt.common.streams.StreamServerAP

From time to time over the past few years, former Patriots safety Rodney Harrison has explained that his former teams needs to add a player like, well, him.

Finally, he thinks they have in Adrian Wilson, who was signed by New England after being cut by the Cardinals.

?Adding him, the veteran leadership, the presence, the respect factor, he?s a guy that?s a terrific blitzer, and a physical presence,? Harrison told Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald.? ?I think he can come in especially during nickel and dime situations, and come down [close to the line] and play that second linebacker position like I did.? He?s physical enough to help out in the run game, but he can also cover tight ends. So he can be that guy next to [Jerod] Mayo who can come in and really make a difference in that nickel and dime package. .?.?. It?s a fantastic move.? I think he?ll help the Patriots immediately.? I think he?ll hold people accountable.?

But what about Ed Reed?? Many believed that Pats coach Bill Belichick would make a beeline for the now-former Raven, who signed with the Texans.?For what the Patriots need, they don?t need Ed Reed.? They need an Adrian Wilson,? Harrison said.? ?They don?t need a free safety that can intercept balls.? They have that.? Devin McCourty is that Ed Reed [role].? He doesn?t have that name behind him.? But he is developing into a young safety.? They need a guy like Adrian Wilson who can really give them versatility in those nickel and dime packages.? He?ll help that secondary right away.?

Harrison recognizes that Wilson has lost a step, but he?s at a point in his career where every player loses a step.

?The one question he?ll have to answer, will he be a full-time, every down safety?? Harrison said.? ?Can he cover in open space?? Will he be able to cover the deep half of the field?? That?s a lot of questions.? But I?ll say it again, I think this is a good move for the Patriots.?

For a team with an offense that has been good enough in recent years to win another Super Bowl, Wilson could be the guy who helps make the difference on the defensive side of the ball.

April Fools: YouTube shut down, Google adds smells

(AP) ? Twitter did away with vowels, Google unveiled a button to add smells and the cast of the 1990s sitcom "Wings" launched a Kickstarter campaign.

The digital world celebrated April Fools' Day with the rollout of mock innovations and parody makeovers. Many of the top online destinations spent Monday mocking themselves and, in Google's case, playfully trying to lure users into pressing their noses against their computer screens.

Google, having already debuted its wearable Google Glass, on Monday showcased Google Nose to add scents to it search results. It urged visitors to lean in close and take a deep whiff for search results such as "unattended litter box."

"In the fast-paced world that we live in, we don't always have time to stop and smell the roses," product manager Jon Wooly said in a video. "Now with Google Nose Beta, the roses are just a click away."

YouTube, despite 72 hours of video uploaded every minute, said it was shutting down. The Google Inc.-owned video site joked that its eight-year rise was merely a lengthy talent search. At the end of the day, nominees were to no longer be accepted so judges could, for the next 10 years, sift through the billions of videos and declare a winner.

Google has always been one of the most enthusiastic April Fools' Day observers, and on Monday it trotted out an extensive lineup of satire. It also added a "treasure map mode" to Google Maps, complete with "underwater street view," and trumpeted Gmail Blue, in which the revolutionary upgrade is the simple addition of the color blue.

The comedy site Funny or Die parodied the recent Kickstarter campaign for a "Veronica Mars" movie with a number of crowd-funding campaigns for other 1990s shows, including "Wings" and "Family Matters." The mock campaigns included videos with original cast members trapped by nostalgia.

"You've been asking for it for years," ''Wings" star Crystal Bernard says in a video asking for $87 million. "Think of it like a $1,000 ticket to the film. Or $20,000!"

Instead of linking to a way to donate money, the mock campaigns led users to charities including the Make-a-Wish Foundation: "Please channel that giving energy into one of these very real, very worthy charities," read the site, slyly suggesting a more deserving cause for donation than Kickstarter projects.

Twitter, not content with the brevity of 140 characters, said it was "annncng" Twttr, a service that would limit messages to just consonants. In an apparent dig at the splitting in half of Netflix memberships between DVD and streaming, Twitter said users would now have to pay $5 a month for the premium use of vowels.

Netflix, meanwhile, boasted joke genre categories such as "Reality TV about people with no concept of reality."

Hulu offered a new slate of programming for its video site, presenting fictional series as if real, completed shows. "30 Rock" fans were baited with the promise of an actual "The Rural Juror" (a fake film frequently alluded to on "30 Rock" starring Jane Krakowski's character), and "Arrested Development" watchers were tempted by finally getting to see an episode of "Mock Trial with J. Reinhold."

U.S. face-transplant recipient marries burn victim: report

(Reuters) - Face-transplant recipient Dallas Wiens married a fellow burn victim on Saturday in the same church where his face was melted in an electrical accident, the Dallas Morning News reported.

In 2011, Wiens received the first full face transplant ever performed in the United States.

Wiens, 27, was married to Jamie Nash of Garland, Texas, at Ridglea Baptist Church in Fort Worth before 150 people, the newspaper said on its website.

"I am blessed beyond measure that you have chosen me, and I love you with all of my heart," the daily quoted Wiens as telling Nash.

Wiens, a Fort Worth native, met Nash in 2011 at Dallas' Parkland Memorial Hospital, where they attended the same support group for burn victims.

Nash, 29, was burned over 70 percent of her body in a one-car accident in June 2010. Today she speaks at schools and churches about the perils of texting while driving.

Wiens was in a cherry picker painting the Ridglea church in November 2008 when his left temple touched a high-voltage wire. His face was burned to the skull and he was left sightless.

Wiens was unconscious at Parkland hospital for three months and underwent more than 20 major surgeries.

It is the second marriage for both Wiens and Nash. Wiens has a 5-year-old daughter, and Nash has a 10-year-old daughter and a son, 6.
