Exclusive: Boston bomb suspects' father abandons plan to return to U.S.

UNDISCLOSED LOCATION IN NORTH CAUCASUS, Russia (Reuters) - The father of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects has abandoned plans to travel to the United States to bury one son and help in the defense of the other, he told Reuters on Sunday in an interview in southern Russia.

Anzor Tsarnaev said he believed he would not be allowed to see his surviving son Dzohkhar, who was captured and has been charged in connection with the April 15 bomb blasts that killed three people and wounded 264.

"I am not going back to the United States. For now I am here. I am ill," Tsarnaev said. He agreed to the face-to-face interview on condition that his location in the North Caucasus, a string of mainly Muslim provinces in southern Russia, not be disclosed.

"Unfortunately I can't help my child in any way. I am in touch with Dzhokhar's and my own lawyers. They told me they would let me know (what to do)," he said.

Tsarnaev had said in the North Caucasus province of Dagestan on Thursday that he planned to travel to the United States to see Dzkhokhar and bury his elder son, Tamerlan, who was shot dead by police in a firefight four days after the bombings.

Full Samsung Knox launch delayed until a 'later date'

Full launch of Samsung Knox delayed until a 'later date'

The Galaxy S 4 launch was also supposed to mark the release of Knox, Samsung's plan to balance home life and work through software. Unfortunately, Galaxy owners will have to live slightly off-kilter for a while longer -- the company has officially delayed full Knox service to a "later date." While the GS 4 ships with the necessary underpinnings, both distributors and providers have to fall into place before the suite is completely ready. Samsung hasn't officially said when it expects Knox to arrive in earnest, although the New York Times claims that it may appear as late as July. Whether or not that's true, the setback adds to what's becoming a hitch-prone debut for Samsung's 2013 Android flagship.

95% Gimme The Loot

All Critics (40) | Top Critics (22) | Fresh (38) | Rotten (2)

A thousand-watt jolt of mischief, a spunky, funky, ebullient indie that packs its 81 minutes with cinematic exhilaration.

It may be a slight movie, but it has its sunny charms.

A movie about teenage taggers in the Bronx should be fast and raw, scruffy and loose, and Adam Leon's Gimme the Loot is just that.

As it lopes along, the movie offers a warm but very sharp portrait of New York's have-nots and their uneasy relationship with the haves.

"Gimme the Loot" shouldn't be as appealing and exuberant as it is, it really shouldn't.

Tashiana Washington and Ty Hickson are terrific in the main roles. So is Zo? Lescaze as Ginnie, a spoiled white kid who teaches the taggers a thing or two about drift and being dissolute.

Simultaneously real and hopeful, "Loot" has almost no plot, but when the setting is so fresh and the characters feel so raw and alive, who needs one?

Ghetto laughs with a sophisticated point of view.

...a magical, summery treat.

Promotes robbery and can't be serious in expecting us to care whether Malcolm and Sofia become more than friends.

The winner of the Indie Spirit 'One to Watch' award could never work again and will always have a memorable New York City film to his credit.

An impressive debut feature, Gimme the Loot is also an unusual take on characters who want to leave their stamp on "the city that never sleeps."

Much more grownup than it looks, Gimme the Loot is that rare teen-centric film whose brisk pace is unburdened by sentimentality.

Writer-director Adam Leon has crafted a classic New York story, a film imbued with the fast rhythms and muggy sensations of city life during the summer.

When it comes to discrimination lawsuits, the clock starts ticking with ...

A federal trial court has reiterated that the important date for filing deadlines is not when an employee learns he was discriminated against, but when he was fired. Employees have to file their EEOC complaint within 300 days of discharge or they lose the right to sue.

Recent case: Tyrone, who is black, worked as a JetBlue pilot. While off-duty at an airport, a woman approached him and they exchanged phone numbers. They spoke by phone several times until someone who identified himself as the ?woman?s boyfriend intercepted a call and told Tyrone to stop calling or he would get him fired. Tyrone never called again.

The boyfriend apparently complained to JetBlue, which fired Tyrone. More than 300 days later, he filed an EEOC complaint alleging the reason he was terminated was that he is black and the woman white. He claimed that only recently had he learned that while discussing appropriate punishment, managers and supervisors used racial slurs and may have treated other, nonblack pilots differently.

The court tossed out the case, explaining that the initial discharge date triggered the 300-day deadline, even if Tyrone didn?t suspect race played a role until later. (Berry v. JetBlue, No. 11-CV-1888, ED NY, 2012)

Final note: JetBlue eventually rehired Tyrone, but he missed out on pension benefits he thought he deserved, and which had been paid to ?others who had been reinstated ?following discharge. He lost that claim, too.

Antares Rocket Launch Is A Success, In Test Of Orbital Supply Vehicle

The Antares rocket sits ready, moments before launch at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility.

The Antares rocket sits ready, moments before launch at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility.

NASA TV

The Antares rocket launch is back on for 5 p.m. ET Sunday afternoon, as engineers and spectators look for the rocket to lift off from a launch pad at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility. A check of all systems at 10 minutes before its launch was positive.

Update at 5:10 p.m. ET. Orbit Achieved, Payload Separated:

Antares moved smoothly through its stages and achieved orbit, drawing applause from engineers watching in the control room. Soon after, it delivered its practice payload into orbit around the Earth. The test mission has about eight more minutes remaining.

Update at 5:02 p.m. ET. Liftoff Is A Success:

The Antares rocket soared above Wallops Island Sunday afternoon. Just before the engines were throttled down in Stage 1, the vehicle was traveling at more than 7,000 miles per hour. Our original post continues:

The mission had been postponed twice this week, after a connecting cable came loose on Wednesday and unfavorable winds forced a one-day delay on Saturday. Officials believe the launch may be visible from sites all along the eastern U.S. coast.

Around 3:30 p.m. ET Sunday, the rocket was approved for launch and fueling of the vehicle began, NASA reported.

The NASA facility is located just behind the beach on Wallops Island on Virginia's Eastern Shore. Antares is a product of a joint development project between NASA and Orbital Sciences Corp., based in Virginia.

As NPR's Geoff Brumfiel reported Wednesday, a successful test would eventually make Orbital "the second private company after California's SpaceX to dock with the space station."

Biden says response to tragedies 'incredible'

DETROIT (AP) ? Vice President Joe Biden on Saturday said the strength of those devastated by the Boston Marathon bombing, Texas plant explosion and Connecticut school shooting is remarkable and proof that some good can come from carnage and pain.

"It showed the incredible resilience, heroism, commitment and love of the people who responded to these tragedies," Biden said at a major fundraiser for Democrats in Michigan, which could play a big role in the 2016 presidential election.

Biden's 50-minute speech in Detroit came at the end of a difficult week marked by violence, tragedy and a jarring defeat for the Obama administration on gun control. The vice president said he was amazed to see footage of marathon runners moving forward despite the explosions.

"I wondered what in the heck are they doing? Were they running away from harm? They were running through it. They were running to a hospital. They were running to help their fellow runners and citizens watching. It was an instinct, sort of stamped in our DNA," he told 1,500 gathered for the state Democratic Party's annual Jefferson-Jackson dinner.

Biden, who has not ruled out a presidential bid in 2016, led the Obama administration's gun-control push. It was defeated Wednesday in the Senate.

The vice president credited Newtown, Conn., victims' families for reliving their losses over and over again while lobbying Congress to act.

He said senators told him not to ask for their vote because "even if we do this, it will never pass the House." Not one of the more than 15 Republican and Democratic senators he called gave him a "substantive reason" for opposing it, he said.

Five still voted for it and "believed that they may be writing themselves into the second edition of 'Profiles of Courage,'" he said.

Biden said winning back the Republican-controlled House in 2014 is crucial and that the American people are on the side of expanded background checks for gun purchases.

He turned his attention to more typical fare for such a political gala ? criticizing the GOP's budget proposals and talking up Democrats' vision for the middle class. He also criticized Michigan's new right-to-work law, which prohibits workers from having to pay union fees or dues.

"We know that the future of this country is going to continue to be built on the backs of the middle class. And we understand it was organized labor who built that middle class. Therefore labor must have a seat at the table, not this right to work for less," he said to loud applause.

Biden never mentioned the 2016 presidential election. Michigan could be important in the campaign because it could have one of the earlier Democratic primaries and is a traditional stronghold for Democrats. The party's candidate has won the past six presidential races in the state.

In May, Biden will keynote a Democratic fundraising dinner in South Carolina, which traditionally holds one of the first primaries of the season.

Crests approaching in several towns in Midwest

CLARKSVILLE, Mo. (AP) ? An all-too-familiar springtime ritual played out around the nation's heartland this weekend as volunteers, National Guardsmen and even prison inmates joined together in an effort to ward off fast-rising floodwaters.

Dangerously high waters dotted at least six Midwestern states following torrential rains this past week that dumped up to 7 inches in some locations. Record flooding was possible in some places as dozens of rivers overflowed their banks.

The water levels forced evacuations, closed roads, swamped hundreds of thousands of acres of farmland and shut down much of the upper Mississippi River to barge traffic.

Two Mississippi River bridges were closed and a third was shut down for a few hours after 114 barges broke loose Saturday night south of St. Louis and floated down the fast-moving river toward Jefferson Barracks Bridge in St. Louis County. The Missouri Department of Transportation shut down the bridge at 2 a.m. Sunday for an inspection; it reopened at 8 a.m.

Because of the danger posed by the runaway barges, the U.S. Coast Guard shut down a 15-mile stretch of the river, much of which was already effectively closed between the Quad Cities and north of St. Louis after the Army Corps of Engineers shut down most locks in that stretch or river.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Michael Weelmaa said the barges had been moored along the side of the river when they broke free, and it wasn't clear how that happened. By midmorning Sunday, all of the barges had been corralled with help from several St. Louis-area tow operators, Weelmaa said.

Several Mississippi River towns north of St. Louis were expected to see crests sometime Sunday, including Clarksville, Mo.

Volunteers in the tiny community have worked endlessly since Wednesday to build a makeshift sandbag levee that seemed to be holding as the crest? expected to be 11 feet above flood stage ? approached. Even prisoners from far-away Jefferson City were brought in to help.

Richard Cottrell, 64, emerged from his two-story brick home ? dating to 1845, the oldest dwelling in town ? around breakfast Sunday to walk his beagle and survey Mississippi's persistent rise. A sandbag wall just in front of his house was holding the river at bay as workers a half a block away hustled to fortify it.

After two days of endless sandbagging, Cottrell thought he could rest Saturday night, but the constant beeping of heavy equipment outside and flood worries kept him up.

"I had a rough night last night. I had an anxiety attack," said Cottrell, who also owns a downtown antique store.

Trish Connelly, 57, was optimistic the town would beat back the river. Her plan to open a new fine arts gallery downtown this weekend were on hold "until we know what the river is going to do," she said.

"This is frustrating for people," Connelly said. "This isn't as bad as 2008, but thank God it stopped raining."

Gov. Jay Nixon on Saturday toured the unprotected-by-choice town that was also flooded in 2008, 2001, 1998, 1995 and many times before that.

"The water is continuing to rise but it is our full hope and expectation that these walls will hold," Nixon said of the sandbag levees. Clarksville has a flood protection system in which a temporary levee ? aluminum slats filled with sand ? can be built if the river rises, but the Mississippi was too quick this time.

Recreational traffic on the river has been halted, too, including the Mark Twain Riverboat that offers excursions at scenic Hannibal, Mo. Owner and pilot Steve Terry has moored the ship since Thursday, with no end in sight.

Even crossing the river was difficult. One of two bridges at Quincy, Ill., closed Friday, and the narrow two-lane bridge at the Missouri town of Louisiana was shut down Saturday. To get across, people in the Louisiana, Mo., area either had to drive 35 miles north or 50-plus miles south.

Louisiana, Mo., resident Erica Campbell, whose rented home in a low-lying area of town was flooded for the second time in three years, and she said she's had enough. Campbell, her husband and their eight kids are packing up.

"We're planning to move to the country ? as far away from water as I can get," Campbell, 35, said.

Smaller rivers across the Midwest were swelling, too. In Illinois, heavy equipment manufacturer Caterpillar will shut down its East Peoria, Ill., factory Sunday as the Illinois River approaches an expected 30-foot crest early next week.

Several Indiana towns were threatened by high water, forcing hundreds of evacuations. The Wabash River in Tippecanoe County reached more than 14 feet above flood stage on Saturday, the highest level since 1958. Indiana Gov. Mitch Pence took a helicopter tour Saturday of damage in Kokomo, Tipton and Elwood.

The mayor of Grand Rapids, Mich., declared a state of emergency Saturday, the same day high water forced the evacuation of the Courtyard Marriott Hotel and an apartment building.

[NSFW] Android adult app store MiKandi bares even more (and does it better) in Version 4

MiKandi

New UI, more content and faster performance all come to one of Android's premier adult apps

MiKandi -- one of the earlier adult app stores for Android -- this week was updated to Version 4, bringing with it a new user interface, improved performance, and more of that old fashion adult fun that doesn't quite fit on Google Play.

Jen McEwen, MiKandi's chief marketing officer, tell us that new look bares more than ever before. "MiKandi is the Las Vegas of app stores," McEwen told Android Central by e-mail. "It’s a fun, sexy playground for adults. With MiKandi V4, we take full advantage of the limited space on every device by displaying more than twice as much content than previous versions. Now browsing and discovering adult apps is like walking down the Las Vegas Strip. Everywhere you turn is a visual feast."

Hopscotch HD Introduces Kids to Programming

iPad: Teaching kids programming is a bit of a daunting task, but Hopscotch HD is a new app for the iPad that hopes to eliminate the frustration by using kid-friendly syntax and brightly colored blocks.

Hopscotch HD is targeted at kids aged 8-12 with the goal of teaching rudimentary coding. The whole process works by simply dragging and dropping method blocks to perform actions. So, if you want a little monkey to move, you just drop in the "move distance" block, set the distance, and hit play. Kids can set up all kinds of triggers for the actions as well, from a simple play button to more advanced settings like tilting or shaking the device. Hopscotch HD is simple enough that most kids will probably get into it right away, but allows for enough experimentation that they'll still learn a lot from it.

Boston Marathon bombing suspect captured: police

By Aaron Pressman and Stephanie Simon

WATERTOWN, Massachusetts (Reuters) - Police captured a 19-year-old man on Friday night suspected of carrying out the Boston Marathon bombings with his older brother after a day-long manhunt using helicopters and heavily armed officers in a Boston suburb.

The Boston Police Department said on Twitter that the suspect was in custody and officers were sweeping the area. Authorities identified him earlier as Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, one of two brothers believed to have carried out Monday's attack at the world-famous event, killing three people and injuring 176.

Police cars and armored vehicles surrounded a house in Watertown on Friday night shortly after police told a news conference that the suspect fled on foot and was still on the loose.

The apparent break in the investigation came after an intense manhunt that virtually closed the city of Boston.

Monday's bombing on the finish line of the marathon was described by President Barack Obama as "an act of terrorism." It was the worst such attack on U.S. soil since the plane hijackings of September 11, 2001.

Images showed that the three-story house where Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was caught had a tarp-covered boat parked on a trailer in the backyard.

Earlier on Friday, Colonel Timothy Alben told a news conference that officers went door-to-door in Watertown and searched houses.

During the search for the men on Friday, two Black Hawk helicopters circled the area. SWAT teams moved through in formation, leaving an officer behind to ensure that searched homes remained secure, a law enforcement official said.

Google Asks Utilities To Make It Easier For Companies To Buy Renewable Energy

1GWSBot_bW5SRiZQhMJNh8VN4u5oBzcRWg298-wGoogle has long had an interest in renewable energy and has now invested more than $1 billion of its own money in alternative energy projects. However, as the company notes in a blog post and white paper today, it’s not always easy for companies that want to buy renewable energy to do so, given that most utilities don’t yet offer a renewable power option yet. In its white paper, Google lays out a plan that would make it easier for more companies to buy green energy. Currently, Google says, businesses have the option to install on-site generation (like the solar cells on its Mountain View headquarters’ roof), buy renewable energy certificates or to sign power purchase agreements. All of these approaches, however, Google argues, have significant downsides. On-site generation usually can’t produce enough energy to power a facility 24/7, for example, and renewable energy certificates don’t “provide assurance that the price paid for RECs is being used to support additional investment in new renewable power generation.” For the most part, companies also have to accept that at least a part of their generation mix includes some carbon-intensive sources. Currently, if a company wants renewable power — and is willing to pay for it — it still can’t get it in most places because it’s simply not being offered. The reason for this, Google argues, is that historically, utilities never designed their rate schedules around a specific category of power generation (though it’s worth noting that at least some utilities recently started offering this option). Instead, the focus was always purely on cost and reliability. So how does Google plan to change this? The company wants utilities to offer companies like Google the choice to buy renewable energy through a new class of service. The service would be voluntary, provided only to those companies that request it but open to all customers that want it and meet basic criteria.” The cost of procuring the renewable energy would only be passed on to those customers who select this option and not impact anybody else. You can read more about the exact details of the proposal here, and we have embedded the proposal below. Google also plans to put this plan into action. As part of the planned $600 million expansion of its Lenoir, N.C. data center, the company has partnered with Duke Energy to develop a new program based on its ideas.

is the cypher = key[placeofkey] + text[placeoftext]; not accessing the ASC11 value? If so, why not? Any help/hint is much appreciated.

    This is adding the two characters 'b' + 'h' which is actually 98 + 104 or 202.

However your printf() function is using an incorrect format specifier. The "%c" specifier is only used for a char, not an int. The correct specifier would be "%d" to print the int cypher.

Boston bombings: City finds healing in small deeds and interfaith gathering

At a crowded interfaith service three days after the Boston Marathon bombings and to loud applause, President Obama praises Bostonians 'resolve' and 'compassion.'

    By Mark Trumbull,?Staff writer, Allison Terry,?Correspondent / April 18, 2013

Three days after bomb blasts brought a devastating halt to the Boston Marathon, an interfaith ?healing our city? gathering served as a focal point for Bostonians struggling to find comfort, renew their spirits, and express their care for one another.

It revealed a city that, while shaken by the violence, hasn?t been knocked off its feet.

?Your resolve is the greatest rebuke to whoever committed this heinous act,? said President Obama, who flew with the First Lady to Boston to attend the event alongside local leaders. ?If they sought to intimidate us, to terrorize us, to shake us from ? the values that make us who we are, as Americans ? well, it should be pretty clear by now that they picked the wrong city to do it.?

Despite the somber occasion, Bostonians were in a mood to greet that sentiment with loud applause. And they rallied similarly behind the president when he tapped into the city?s passion for sports, predicting that crowds would again line Boylston Street for future marathons and post-championship parades.

The appearance by the president brought needed encouragement to the city, as did the prayers offered by ministers and the remarks from others, including Mayor Thomas Menino and Gov. Deval Patrick.

But the event at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston?s South End also showed Mr. Obama and other leaders drawing strength from this city and its residents.

?You?ve shown us, Boston, that in the face of evil, Americans will lift up what?s good,? Obama said. ?In the face of cruelty, we will choose compassion.?In the face of those who would visit death upon innocents, we will choose to save and to comfort and to heal.?We?ll choose friendship. We?ll choose love.?

In tough times, those qualities heal, and they?ve been on display in Boston since Monday in everything from direct care for victims to small acts of kindness, such as sharing hugs with friends or stopping to hold a door for a stranger.

Bostonians have also been joining together at a range of prayer meetings. The service Obama attended Thursday, an interfaith event with various dignitaries on view and overflow crowds out in the street, was the biggest.

?Any time you have this kind of trauma ? it?s important to have a way for everybody to get together,? said Byron Rushing, a representative in the statehouse who attended the meeting.

It is an important moment, he said, for a city of great diversity that has not always been known for cohesiveness, to preserve and build on a hard-won unity.

?We have worked very hard to be a city for everybody,? he said.

The meeting drew together people of all faiths and backgrounds ? and it drew a much larger crowd than could fit in the roughly 2,000-seat cathedral.

While special access was provided for bombing victims and their families, others had to line up early in the morning for a chance to attend.

Monica Etzel, who was visiting from Salt Lake City, said Boston was slow and quiet, different than she remembered from her previous visits.??Boston is a grieving city,? she said as she waited to attend the 11 a.m. event. ?The mood is somber, but people are being so kind.?

Oklahoma police inspect van reported as suspicious, find no threat

(Reuters) - Oklahoma City police used a robot to investigate a suspicious van parked outside City Hall on Wednesday, and while no threat was found, officials were on high alert in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombings.

City Hall and surrounding buildings were evacuated while police inspected a U-Haul van parked outside the government buildings. Police said the van had been stolen and that it was reported as unattended by a nervous citizen.

The incident happened just two days before the anniversary of the April 19, 1995 truck bombing of a federal government building in Oklahoma City that killed 168 people and injured more than 650 others.

Officials said they are always vigilant for any potential threat, but nerves are on edge following the bombs in Boston at the marathon finish line on Monday that killed three people and injured 176 others.

"People are very sensitive right now because of the Boston bombing," said Oklahoma City Police spokeswoman, Sgt. Jennifer Wardlow.

Facebook unleashes new SDK for iOS with improved Open Graph and login support

Facebook unleashes new SDK for iOS with improved Open Graph and login support

At its Mobile DevCon in New York today, Facebook took the wraps off a new SDK for iOS. This marks version 3.5 of the development kit, with the biggest news being improvements to Open Graph. While devs have been able to leverage Facebook's Open Graph for mobile products before, new APIs being released should simplify the act of tapping into the vast repository of social data. One of the big improvements is the creation of an Object API, which removes the need to host a website with Open Graph-specific tags. There's also a new native dialog for sharing content to Facebook from any application. Perhaps less immediately important to users are the improvements to the login system, but it's a major initiative for Facebook. As the network moves to become a single sign-on platform for the web, streamlining the act of logging in to other properties using your Facebook account becomes increasingly important. The company's Douglas Purdy claims that the process is now 20-percent faster than the previous dialog. The biggest question still left hanging in the air is just when we can expect the SDK upgrades to be made available on Android. Purdy did promise that it would be coming "very quickly."

    Ozzy Osbourne and Sharon Osbourne.

    By Paul Casciato, Reuters

Black Sabbath singer Ozzy Osbourne apologized on Tuesday for bingeing on drink and drugs over the last year and a half but said he was not getting a divorce from his wife Sharon.

The British singer's comments on his Facebook page were a response to media speculation about the state of his marriage, with reports that he and Sharon had split up after more than 30 years and were living separately.

"Just to set the record straight, Sharon and I are not divorcing," Osbourne, 64, said on his Facebook page. "I'm just trying to be a better person."

He said he had been drinking and taking drugs for the last year and a half and had been in a "very dark place", but has now been sober for 44 days.

Osbourne, who made his name as lead singer of the heavy metal band Black Sabbath, has frequently spoken over the years about his battle with drugs and alcohol and has spent time in rehabilitation clinics.

"I would like to apologize to Sharon, my family, my friends and my band mates for my insane behavior during this period ... and my fans," wrote Osbourne.

The Osbournes have become one of Hollywood's most famous couples since starring in a reality television show, "The Osbournes", alongside two of their children, Jack and Kelly, which gave an insight into their family life in Beverly Hills.

Sharon Osbourne, 60, is a regular panelist on U.S. reality TV talent show "America's Got Talent" and played out a battle with colon cancer in public.

Strange new bursts of gamma rays point to a new way to destroy a star

Strange new bursts of gamma rays point to a new way to destroy a star [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 16-Apr-2013

A team led by the University of Warwick has pinpointed a new type of exceptionally powerful and long-lived cosmic explosion, prompting a theory that they arise in the violent death throes of a supergiant star.

These explosions create powerful blasts of high energy gamma-rays, known as gamma-ray bursts, but while most bursts are over in about a minute, this new type can last for several hours.

The first example was found by astronomers on Christmas Day 2010, but it lacked a measurement of distance and so remained shrouded in mystery with two competing theories put forward for its origin.

The first model suggested it was down to an asteroid, shredded by the gravity of a dense neutron star in our own galaxy, the second that it was a supernova in a galaxy 3.5 billion light years away, or in the more common language of astronomers at a redshift of 0.33.

A new study by a team of scientists led by Dr Andrew Levan at the University of Warwick finds several more examples of these unusual cosmic explosions and shows that the Christmas Day burst took place in a galaxy much further away than the two theories suggested.

This research is to be presented at the GRB 2013 Symposium in Nashville, Tennessee on Tuesday 16 April.

Using data from the Gemini Telescope in Hawaii, the scientists calculated that this ultra-long gamma-ray burst had a redshift of 0.847. This gives it a location of approximately half-way to the edge of the observable universe, or 7 billion light years away.

Armed with its location, Dr Levan's team, which included scientists from an international collaboration, has developed a new theory to explain how it occurred.

They suggest this kind of burst is caused by a supergiant, a star 20 times more massive than the sun, which evolves to become among the biggest and brightest stars in the universe with a radius of up to 1 billion miles - up to 1,000 times that of the sun.

They believe the ultra-long durations of the Christmas gamma-ray burst and two other similar bursts are simply down to the sheer size of the supergiants exploding in a supernova.

Most stars that create gamma-ray bursts are thought to be relatively small and dense, and the explosion that destroys them punches through the star in a matter of seconds. In the case of these new ultra-long bursts the explosion takes much longer to propagate through the star, and so the gamma-ray burst lasts for a much longer time..

Dr Levan said: "These events are amongst the biggest explosions in nature, yet we're only just beginning to find them.

"It really shows us that the Universe is a much more violent and varied place than we'd imagined.

"Previously we've found lots of gamma-ray events with short durations, but in the past couple of years we've started to see the full picture."

Nial Tanvir, a professor at the University of Leicester, and second author of the study added: "We believe that powering the explosion is a newly formed black hole in the heart of the star.

"Predicting the detailed behaviour of matter falling into a black hole in these circumstances turns out to be very difficult, and from a theoretical point of view we didn't initially expect explosions at all.

"The amazing thing is that nature seems to have found ways of blowing up a wide range of stars in the most dramatic and violent way."

The more common type of gamma-ray burst is thought to be caused when a Wolf-Rayet star in the final phase of its evolution collapses into a black hole at its own core.

Matter is drawn into the black hole, but some of its energy escapes and is focussed into a jet of material which blasts out in two directions forming copious gamma-rays in the process.

These jets are ejected extremely quickly (close to the speed of light), otherwise the material would fall into the black hole from which it can't escape. For this reason they last only a few seconds.

However, a gamma-ray burst in a bigger star the size of a supergiant needs to power through a larger reservoir of material, hence its longer duration.

A so -called Wolf-Rayet star, it has a mass ten or more times the mass of the sun but has a comparable size. The foreground star is the suggested progenitor of an ultra-long gamma-ray burst (GRB). It has a mass of perhaps 20 times the sun but is up to a thousand times larger. In both cases the GRB is produced by a jet punching through the star, but in the case of the ultra-long GRBs the much larger size of the star creates a much longer lived jet.

An artist's impression of the stars creating gamma-ray bursts. The background blue star is the progenitor of a standard long duration gamma-ray burst.

The durations of gamma-ray bursts and the inferred sizes of their progenitors. The lower panel shows the three types of GRB, the short and long duration bursts that have been known for many years and the newly discovered population of ultra-long GRBs.
