Hopscotch HD Introduces Kids to Programming

iPad: Teaching kids programming is a bit of a daunting task, but Hopscotch HD is a new app for the iPad that hopes to eliminate the frustration by using kid-friendly syntax and brightly colored blocks.

Hopscotch HD is targeted at kids aged 8-12 with the goal of teaching rudimentary coding. The whole process works by simply dragging and dropping method blocks to perform actions. So, if you want a little monkey to move, you just drop in the "move distance" block, set the distance, and hit play. Kids can set up all kinds of triggers for the actions as well, from a simple play button to more advanced settings like tilting or shaking the device. Hopscotch HD is simple enough that most kids will probably get into it right away, but allows for enough experimentation that they'll still learn a lot from it.
